Joshua B. Ek explains how difficult really is to treat anorexia, the problems and misconceptions behind this devastating mental problem and how to treat it. In this episode Joshua also discusses Eugenia's family, Anosognosia and the irresponsible and false information spread by some youtubers.
The best time to identify a mental issue is when that issue has already started affecting your social life, your health, job.
Many famous people have talked about it Demi Lovato, Princes Diana, Tracy Gold who suffered from Anorexia and Emelle Lewis who struggled with anorexia and only weighed just five stone. But while for her things turned the right way, today she is healthy and happy... for all the others, the other possible end is death. There are really no other doors, you either recover or die. And it takes time. Emelle's fight was a 7 year journey. This is how long it takes.
Something many people out there missed is that her denial is a symptom that almost every person suffering with an eating disorder has. It's called Anosognosia, essentially means that a person is unaware or “in unintentional denial” of their illness or symptoms... because their brain doesn't work as it should.
This was best described by psychologists, Bryan Lask and Ian Framptom back in 2009 as "confusing", because all patients studied had emotional flactuation where at times they where aware of their problem while other times they appear to switch to instant denial. This type of shifting can be very confusing for them but also for their families.
